she was wasting her time. He was also genuinely understanding her and identifying the exact reason why she broke up with him, and helping to solve that problem by proclaiming his love for her in the letter, in order to convince her.

He went home and called three or four times, only to hear it ring until he decided to leave a message-- a total of three messages! Of course one would have been enough. She respected Tom. He was someone she looked up to, until now. He was starting to be perceived as being weak. She was losing respect for him because most of us want someone emotionally strong, yet sensitive to our feelings.

The next day Barbara answered the phone. Tom said, "I wanted to let you know the reason i said we shouldn't see each other. I wanted you to have more time with your daughter."

"That's okay, I know you didn't mean it" (Of course, part of the reason was because he was feeling rejected.) They saw each other that night. But the rest of the week Barbara avoided Toms calls, which made him worried and frustrated again. If she was testing him, he surely wasn't passing.
